Plans to Revoke Migrant Legal Status Initiated by Trump Administration Officials, Contrary to Biden’s Welcome Policy

“The Trump administration is reportedly making arrangements to repeal the legal status of numerous migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who were granted permission to enter the U.S. legally under the former President Joe Biden’s tenure. This information comes from confidential government documents that CBS News has examined.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is formulating a plan, as per an unreleased notice, to end a Biden administration program completely. This program facilitated over 530,000 migrants from the aforementioned countries to arrive in the U.S., given they had financial support from American sponsors.

The Biden administration had contended that this policy, recognized as CHNV, deterred illegal immigration from these four Latin American countries by providing them with legal avenues to enter the U.S. However, the Trump administration suspended the program shortly after President Trump’s inauguration. Trump’s officials argued that the program was an improper application of immigration parole, the legal basis that the Biden administration employed to admit those under the sponsorship initiative and to enable them to apply for work permits.

According to the new proposal, the Trump administration aims to rescind the parole status of those admitted under the CHNV policy. They would be put into deportation proceedings if they have not applied for, or achieved, another immigration benefit, such as asylum, a green card, or Temporary Protected Status.

The number of people who have applied for other immigration programs out of those who were allowed into the U.S. under this initiative remains uncertain. The timeline for the Trump administration’s plan’s finalization is also yet to be determined.

Individuals who have their parole classification rescinded and do not possess another immigration status would not be eligible to be legally employed in the U.S. They would also receive notices to appear in immigration court, the preliminary stage in the deportation process.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration authorized federal immigration agents, including those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to seek the deportation, sometimes expedited, of those granted entrance to the U.S. under various Biden administration policies, including the CHNV program.

Requests for comment from representatives for DHS have not been responded to immediately.”
