CBS News conducted interviews with over a dozen individuals familiar with the events at Mar-a-Lago during the period between the Election day and Inauguration day. These individuals wished to remain anonymous as they shared insights about the activities at the president-elect’s Florida resort prior to his second term in office.
Donald Trump was seen managing calls on various phones and controlling the music playlist at his private club in Palm Beach, Florida. According to those close to him, Trump has been in high spirits since his election, reflecting on his transformation from a controversial defendant to a powerful world leader.
The president-elect’s Florida resort was constantly bustling with corporate executives, affluent individuals, and those hoping for coveted appointments and favors. On some nights, hundreds of guests attended multiple events simultaneously. Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy were among the attendees, seen brainstorming thoughts on a napkin at one of the club’s bars.
Unprecedented access to Trump ended on Friday, as the base of his new government was moved north. Transition work was also carried out at a nondescript high-rise in West Palm Beach, with potential hires interviewed in key-card-controlled conference rooms. However, not everyone was satisfied with the transition process, with some expressing concerns about slow hiring, internal disputes, and excessive loyalty tests.
Despite the concerns, those who made it to Mar-a-Lago seemed content. Trump’s incoming chief of staff, Susie Wiles, expressed her disinterest in big egos competing for positions, but there was plenty of that nonetheless. According to someone close to the Trump team, the atmosphere was a mix of reality TV shows like “Real Housewives,” “The Bachelor,” and “The Apprentice.”
Among the prominent figures present was Elon Musk, who made frequent appearances. VIPs awaiting face-to-face appointments with Trump were asked to arrive early. If Trump was in a receptive mood, decisions were made quickly, with several hires selected on the spot. The transition period at Mar-a-Lago was a whirlwind of activity, from golf outings with notable figures to a packed calendar of events.
Despite the bustling scene at Mar-a-Lago, the Trump team was focused on preparing for their second term in office. Executive actions relating to energy, immigration, and government “weaponization” were on the agenda, as well as plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Mar-a-Lago was seen as a safe haven for those in Trump circles, providing a space where they felt secure and accepted. As the transition period comes to an end, the focus now shifts to the White House, marking the end of an era at the Florida resort.
