U.S. imposes fresh sanctions on Russian and Iranian entities for spreading false information targeting U.S. electorate.

The U.S. government has initiated penalties against two organizations associated with Iranian and Russian activities aimed at misleading American voters, potentially influencing the forthcoming election. The U.S. Treasury Department declared these sanctions, asserting that these entities were trying to exacerbate discord within the American population ahead of the November ballot. U.S. intelligence sources have indicted both nations for disseminating misinformation, including spurious videos, news articles, and social media content, with the intention of swaying voters and corroding faith in American democracy.

Bradley T. Smith, the acting undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the Treasury, stated, “Both Iran and Russia have targeted our electoral systems and institutions, attempting to fragment the American society through calculated disinformation campaigns.”

According to authorities, the Russian outfit, the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise, was responsible for the creation, funding, and distribution of misleading information about American political figures. This included the production of deepfake videos through the use of artificial intelligence. The sanctions also extend to its director, who is purported to have close ties with Russian military intelligence agents supervising cyber-attacks and subversion against the West.

The authorities also claim that the center utilized AI to swiftly generate fabricated videos about American politicians, set up dozens of bogus news websites to appear authentic, and even paid American web companies to produce content favoring Russia.

The Iranian entity, the Cognitive Design Production Center, is a subsidiary of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, a group that the U.S. has labeled a foreign terrorist organization. Officials have reported that the center has been trying to incite political unrest in the United States since 2023.

U.S. intelligence agencies have implicated the Iranian government in attempts to inspire protests in the U.S. in response to Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Iran has also faced accusations of infiltrating the accounts of several top current and former U.S. officials, including senior members of Donald Trump’s campaign.

In the lead-up to the election, U.S. intelligence officials reported that Russia, Iran, and China were all attempting to undermine confidence in U.S. democracy. They also concluded that Russia was trying to support the ultimate victor, Trump, who has commended Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposed cutting funds to Ukraine and consistently criticized the NATO military alliance.

Conversely, Iran was working to oppose Trump’s candidacy, officials reported. The incoming president’s first administration terminated a nuclear agreement with Iran, reestablished sanctions, and ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, an act that prompted vows of revenge from Iran’s leadership.

Both Russian and Iranian officials have dismissed allegations that they attempted to influence the 2024 election outcome. A spokesperson for Russia’s embassy in Washington stated in an email on Tuesday, “Russia has never interfered, nor does it interfere with the internal affairs of other nations.” A response from Iranian officials was not immediately received on Tuesday.
