Upcoming Nvidia Initiative: Fueling the Future of Humanoid Robotics

Semiconductor titan Nvidia is set to delve deeper into the realm of robotics in 2025. The firm is gearing up to introduce its latest series of small-scale computers, specifically designed for humanoid robots, known as Jetson Thor. This has been confirmed by the Financial Times, and the launch is expected to take place within the first half of the new year.

This step, although anticipated, is a part of a long-term, evolving game plan. In March, Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, demonstrated a variety of robots, all running on Nvidia’s chips, during the company’s yearly gathering. Nvidia’s objective is not to directly challenge manufacturers such as Tesla, but to supply the numerous robot creators worldwide with a foundational OEM. This was stated by Deepu Talla, Nvidia’s vice president of robotics, during a press meeting in Tokyo the previous month.

When asked about the timing of the move, Talla mentioned to the Financial Times that the decision was influenced by two key technological advancements: the proliferation of generative AI models and the capability to train robots using these models in simulated settings.

Another crucial but unspoken factor is Nvidia’s move towards AI-powered robots. This comes at a time when major clients such as Amazon and Google are striving to decrease their reliance on Nvidia’s AI chips by developing their own.
