Researcher States Alberta’s Snowpack is in Excellent Condition – Edmonton

Title: Snow-filled Winter Brings Relief to Alberta’s Agriculture Sector

Alberta’s farming community has welcomed the increased snowfall this winter, a significant change from last year when the region around Edmonton saw minimal snow cover. The moisture level is crucial for crop and livestock production, says Scott Jespersen, the vice-chair of Alberta Grains, and a farmer near Spruce Grove, Alberta. He notes that past dry seasons have led to water depletion in local sloughs and dugouts.

John Pomeroy, a researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, studies water resources from Canmore, Alberta. He suggests that the current weather conditions will assist in replenishing the water levels. While mountain snow levels are relatively low for this period, the snowpack is above average in most parts of the province.

“This is akin to having a savings account, as the melting snow will seep into the soil, aiding crop growth,” Pomeroy explains. The farmers are hoping for more snowfall before spring to further boost their ‘moisture bank.’ “We can always use more,” adds Jespersen.

This news is particularly relevant for individuals looking to invest in or are interested in the agricultural sector, but it also serves as a general update on Alberta’s farming conditions.
