Throughout the year, Nova Scotia’s volunteer firefighters organize a series of 50/50 raffles as a fundraising initiative to support fire departments across the province. The stakes rise significantly each December, when participants have a shot at winning a million-dollar prize.
Recently, a resident from Sydney became the lucky winner of a whopping $1.3 million through this mega draw. Andrew Wallis, a representative from the Amherst Firefighters Association, shared that like many winners, the Sydney man initially thought it was a prank. It took some time for the reality of his newfound fortune to sink in.
The funds collected from these raffles are utilized for essential purposes such as first aid training and the procurement of new equipment. Wallis elaborated, “Through social media platforms like Facebook, we’re able to share with everybody where that money actually goes. Be it for equipment, trucks, boats, hoses, helmets, or any other necessities.”
This transparency ensures contributors can see firsthand where their donations are directed. The next big event on the calendar is the Christmas draw, which wraps up on Boxing Day at 9 p.m.
