Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, has announced her withdrawal from the race for Marco Rubio’s Senate seat in Florida. Rubio, a Republican Senator, has been nominated by the incoming administration to serve as Secretary of State.
In a statement, Lara Trump said, “After considerable thought, reflection, and support from many, I have decided to withdraw myself from the consideration for the United States Senate.” This announcement was made on her official social media platforms.
This decision comes after weeks of speculation following her resignation as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Her departure from the RNC fueled rumors of a potential Senate run, raising questions about her political ambitions.
Lara Trump’s future plans remain unclear, but she has teased a “major announcement” to be made in January. Meanwhile, the task of filling Rubio’s Senate seat, should he be confirmed, falls to the Republican Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis. The chosen replacement would serve for two years until the subsequent election scheduled for 2026.
Lara Trump’s tenure as RNC co-chair began in March and was marked by significant achievements, including the GOP’s reclaiming of the White House and Senate control and maintaining a slim House majority. Her future moves are expected to have an impact on Republican politics, given her enhanced political stature and connection to the incoming President.
Her possible run for the Senate had garnered support from some Republican figures, including Maye Musk, the mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk. Rubio’s confirmation to his new role is anticipated to be swift, with DeSantis asserting that Floridians are likely to know their next senator by the beginning of the new year.
