“Residents claim Halifax tent city blaze could’ve resulted in disaster: Witness recounts hearing cries for help” – Halifax

Article Title: Fire at Dartmouth Encampment: A Story of Tragedy and Heroism

In the early hours of Monday morning, a devastating fire engulfed the Green Road encampment in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, leaving nothing behind but the charred remains of four tents. By Wednesday, cleanup crews were already on the scene, clearing away the debris that once served as homes for the camp’s residents.

“P.J. McKay, a longstanding resident of the Green Road encampment, now finds herself starting from scratch, relying on the goodwill of others,” said P.J. McKay, who lives in a camper on the opposite side of the field where the fire started.

She recalls being jolted awake by a loud noise around 6:30 a.m. on that fateful Monday. “At first, I thought it was just doors slamming, as it had happened before,” she recalled. “But then the noise grew louder, and when I looked outside, I saw the entire corner of the camp lit up in flames.”

Thankfully, Halifax Fire and Emergency reported that no one was hurt in the blaze, but according to McKay, it was a dangerously close call. The rapidly spreading fire, fueled by the close proximity of the tents, had trapped two residents inside their tent.

“But, we had a hero among us. He tore through the back of the tent and pulled the trapped residents to safety,” said McKay. “He heard their screams and couldn’t bear to stand by and watch them burn.”

Although the hero prefers to remain nameless, McKay affirms that his timely intervention saved the lives of their two neighbors before the arrival of the emergency services.
