Olynyk makes a comeback to guide the Raptors’ youthful reserve team

The Toronto Raptors’ bench, affectionately dubbed as “Kelly’s Kids,” witnessed the return of Canadian centre Kelly Olynyk during a recent game against the Dallas Mavericks. Despite the Raptors’ 125-118 loss, Olynyk made a significant impact in his season debut, after a hiatus due to missing the team’s initial 23 games.

Olynyk, at 33, was the senior player off the bench, a clear seven years older than his teammates. He asserted his role in guiding the rookies, including Jonathan Mogbo, Ja’Kobe Walter, Jamison Battle, and Davion Mitchell. Olynyk aims to foster a positive playing environment, ensuring efficient ball movement and strategic game plays.

Olynyk, a Toronto native who was later raised in Kamloops, B.C., averaged 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in his previous 28 games for the Raptors. His career also includes valuable experience from playing with the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, and Utah.

During his recent game, Olynyk scored 13 points, secured four rebounds, and assisted once, marking an impressive return. Raptors’ head coach Darko Rajakovic lauded the addition of Olynyk, highlighting his distinct playing style, shooting prowess, and excellent teamwork.

The Raptors have been commended for their swift transition plays this season. Olynyk, with his ability to shoot, pass, and cut, is prepared to maintain this momentum, catering to his younger teammates’ energy and speed. Despite needing to regain his fitness after a prolonged break, Olynyk is confident about his contribution to the team’s dynamic gameplay.
