Tom Jackson’s Innovative Crazy Sox Box Initiative Aims to Motivate Canadians to Aid the Homeless in Halifax

The Santa’s Crazy Sox Box initiative may sound whimsical, much like a chapter out of a Dr. Seuss tale, but its conception is attributed to renowned Canadian actor, Tom Jackson.

Jackson, famed for his roles in North of 60 and Shining Time Station, was involved in shooting Sullivan’s Crossing in Halifax during the previous winter. It was during this period that the idea for the initiative was born, in collaboration with fellow crewmate Lori Bellefontaine.

“We recognized the need to do something special for Christmas,” Jackson shared. The initiative saw success as they amassed significant collections of socks, so much so, that they could distribute between 500 to 1,000 pairs to the encampment across the City Hall.

In 2023, Steve Wilsack, a local resident, was inspired by Jackson’s efforts and stepped forward to lend a hand as he observed the Halifax encampment grow. They continue to join forces and strongly believe that no act of kindness is insignificant.

“That’s the crux of it, and it truly makes a difference,” Wilsack informed Global News. “A simple cup of coffee or a conversation can make a world of difference. If you are unable to provide financial support, you can contribute your time or engage in a conversation.”

This year, the Santa’s Crazy Sox Box Campaign has broadened its scope to include not only fun socks but also hats, gloves, and warm clothes.

Jackson was recently seen dropping off a box filled with socks and other items at the Soul’s Harbor Rescue Mission in Halifax. “The demand is greater than ever, and these are not just words,” explained Michelle Porter, the CEO of Souls Harbour. “It’s a sentiment that every charity echoes. We observe more individuals living in poverty, homeless, and residing in tents.”

The organizers of Santa’s Crazy Sox Box Campaign are eager for the initiative to spread nationwide. “So, join us in this endeavor, get a box, fill it with socks, and deliver it to a shelter like this one,” urged Jackson.

“And they will ensure it reaches those in need.”
