The upcoming byelection in Alberta’s Lethbridge-West has all three contenders stepping up their game to ensure voters turn up at the polls, in spite of the current postal strike. The contest, scheduled for December 18, is heating up, regardless of the frigid weather.
Elections Alberta reports three individuals vying for the seat, each one advocating for voters to exercise their democratic right. Rob Miyashiro, the NDP candidate, stated, “We urge our supporters to vote as early as possible to avoid the last-minute rush.” John Middleton-Hope of UCP echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for citizens to cast their votes. Layton Veverka of the Alberta Party is focused on raising awareness by informing people about an alternative choice in the election.
Naheed Nenshi, the NDP leader, expressed concerns about the timing of the election potentially leading to lower voter turnout. Middleton-Hope, however, dismissed these concerns as hypocritical, citing a previous winter byelection that saw a significant voter turnout.
The ongoing Canada Post strike adds another layer of concern, but Nenshi assures voters that they can still vote without the usual card. Elections Alberta has implemented several strategies to ensure that voting information reaches everyone, including traditional media advertisements, social media campaigns, and flyers.
The candidates are addressing voters’ concerns, with Veverka sharing his discussions with citizens about current economic issues. Miyashiro and Middleton-Hope have identified health care, affordability, CPP, and education as key concerns for their constituents.
Despite their differences, Middleton-Hope promises to represent all citizens, including those of other political affiliations, should he be elected. However, Nenshi countered by implying that Middleton-Hope would be a minor player in the government if elected.
A forum for the candidates is scheduled for December 10 at the Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch, though Veverka will be unable to attend due to his work commitments. The Alberta Liberal Party has announced that it will not be participating in this byelection.
