Canada Post recently reported an estimated backlog of 10 million parcels due to a strike by over 55,000 workers across the nation, just before the Black Friday sales. This work stoppage has greatly impacted the company’s delivery service.
Lisa Liu, the company spokesperson, stated on Monday that talks held over the weekend with the union have made limited progress. The focus of Canada Post has been to expedite discussions on modifying its delivery model.
On the other hand, a representative from the union stated that discussions have been primarily centered on safeguarding jobs. The representative further claimed that the Crown corporation is seeking to retract the rights and benefits that workers have gained over years of service.
One of the primary issues in the negotiations has been the extension of parcel deliveries to the weekend. However, there exists a disparity between the union and Canada Post on the execution of this plan.
Canada Post, which reported a loss of $315 million before tax in its third quarter, has been struggling to compete with other delivery service providers. The company is proposing weekend deliveries as a strategy to increase revenue.
Meanwhile, a special mediator has been appointed by Ottawa to assist with the negotiations between Canada Post and the union.
