As Alberta faces freezing temperatures reaching into the negative double digits this week, heating systems in residences throughout the province are being put to the test. However, according to heating specialists, numerous homeowners are unprepared for the icy conditions.
Lucas Kirsch from 2020 Master Home Inspections emphasizes the importance of ensuring adequate insulation in the attic, particularly the attic hatch, when preparing one’s home for winter. He added that this prevents the indoor air from moving into the colder space in the attic, which can lead to a phenomenon known as attic rain.
Attic rain occurs when warm air encounters cold elements like nails sticking out through the attic’s sheathing, resulting in frost balls. Kirsch warned that this can turn problematic when temperatures rise, causing rain in the attic and potential damages.
Furthermore, he states that this can lead to microbial growth, causing further complications. Water could potentially seep through ceiling lights or other fixtures, leading to pricey repair costs.
Igloo HVAC is reportedly receiving a high volume of calls from individuals with furnace issues, so much so that their technicians are struggling to keep up with the demand. Landon Johnston of Igloo HVAC underlines the importance of annual furnace maintenance. However, many homeowners procrastinate until winter hits, and then face heating issues.
Johnston noted that every year when temperatures drop below freezing, it places significant stress on heating systems. Despite receiving 10 to 15 calls daily for furnace problems, road conditions limit them to addressing only about half of these calls.
Johnston advocates for regular maintenance, stating that it could save homeowners hundreds of dollars in the long run, despite the initial cost of $90 to $150.
