In January, Vancouver will host its first professional women’s hockey game, presenting a unique opportunity for local fans.
As announced by the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), the Toronto Scepters and Montreal Victoire will clash at Rogers Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
This event is part of the league’s “Takeover Tour,” aimed at promoting the new league by staging nine regular season games at neutral venues.
Those willing to travel can also watch the Montreal Victorie take on the Boston Fleet at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday, Jan. 5.
Other cities where Takeover Tour games will be held include Denver, Quebec City, Buffalo, Raleigh, Detroit, and St. Louis.
“Expanding PWHL games to fans in both countries is a logical move as we continue to grow our audience,” said Amy Scheer, PWHL senior vice-president of business operations, in a press release.
She added: “The positive response from cities eager to connect with our League was incredibly inspiring. The PWHL Takeover Tour allows us to showcase our game and exceptional athletes across North America, which is an exciting milestone for our players and an important business strategy as we contemplate expansion.”
The PWHL is considering expansion plans of up to two teams for the 2025-2026 season, but the league is yet to indicate the potential markets for a new franchise.
The new league will kick off its second season on Nov. 30, following a successful debut season that created a buzz.
Tickets for the takeover game go on presale starting Thursday, with general sales opening at 10 a.m. on Friday.
