Experience the blend of ancient and modern with complimentary walking tours in the Central district of Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Urban Renewal Authority (URA) has initiated complimentary tours, engaging senior volunteers to narrate the first-hand experiences of Central and Sheung Wan districts. This move aims to provide a more immersive experience to visitors and locals alike.

The initiative, known as “Exploring Central with Locals,” integrates digital art into five different locations. Incorporated with Augmented Reality (AR) technology, the art aims to increase visitor engagement and create attractive spots for photography.

The URA is set to conduct over 40 guided tours, accommodating around 500 residents until mid-January. A team of 60 volunteers has been assembled to lead these free tours, which are scheduled three days a week, with the first tour having commenced last Saturday.

Ernest Cheng Hin-kong, URA’s General Manager of Property and Land, stated that while the tours are currently exclusive to locals, the authority plans to collaborate with the Hong Kong Tourism Board. This cooperation could potentially expand the tours to include tourists.

He added, “This successful model is apt for highlighting the district’s dynamism in collaboration with the local community.”

This initiative aligns with one of the key areas highlighted in Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s policy address last month, emphasising the enhancement of tourism.

This move is not only expected to boost tourism but can also be attractive to those looking to invest in the region, providing them with an in-depth understanding of the districts’ history and culture. However, investment is not the primary intention of this initiative; it is aimed at enriching the local cultural experience for visitors and residents alike.
