The Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Calgary Branch 285 is set to launch its annual poppy campaign, with hopes of raising hefty donations in support of Canada’s veterans. This year, the legion is focused on providing aid to returning soldiers grappling with PTSD, among other challenges.
On a recent Saturday, the Legion marked the official start of its poppy campaign near the time capsule at the popular Chinook Mall. Joey Bleviss, a representative from Branch 285, stated that the wreaths were laid in honor of the fallen soldiers, air force personnel, and sailors who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms enjoyed today.
Bleviss emphasized the urgent need for support for returning soldiers, especially those “suffering from PTSD”. The Legion hopes to raise approximately a million dollars in the Calgary area. The funds raised will be used to provide essential needs such as prosthetics for the injured, food supplies, shelter, and medical care. The support will also extend to the families of the veterans.
The Legion has been using the poppy as a national symbol of remembrance since 1921, inspired by the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, penned by Lt. Col John McCrae in 1915. As per tradition, the poppy is worn from the last Friday of October until Remembrance Day. This year’s poppy campaign will run until November 11.
This fundraising initiative is of particular importance to those interested in investing or supporting charitable causes, although the primary purpose is to provide much-needed support for veterans and their families.
The Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Calgary Branch 285 invites everyone to contribute to this significant cause, thus making a difference in the lives of those who have served their country.
