Key Details Unveiled About the Upcoming PlayStation 6: Our Comprehensive Knowledge to Date

It appears that Sony may be unveiling details about its upcoming PlayStation model sooner than expected.

In a 2024 conversation with Bloomberg, Naomi Matsuoka, Sony’s Senior Vice President, hinted at the PS5 nearing the end of its life cycle. Although a PlayStation 6 wasn’t explicitly mentioned, it’s safe to infer that Sony is possibly considering its next console.

While all we have are rumors at the moment, that doesn’t stop us from speculating about the future gaming consoles. How will the PS6 stack up against the PS5? Will the top-rated games of PS5 transition to the PS6? And what about the upcoming PS5 games set to launch?

Nothing is confirmed yet, but let’s explore what the future of PlayStation could potentially look like.

The most significant hint about the possible release of the PS6 might be around 2027. This speculation is based on an official Microsoft court document related to the Activision Blizzard acquisition. The document suggests that Sony might lose access to Call of Duty by the time they launch their next PlayStation console. While the exact date is redacted, speculators have tied this to Microsoft’s deal with Sony to keep Activision Blizzard games on PlayStation till 2027.

Based on previous trends, the lifespan of each console has been about seven years. With the PS5 launching in 2020, a 2027 release for the PS6 would align with this trend.

As for the price of the PS6, it’s too early to predict with any certainty. The cost largely depends on the specifications, which are unknown at this point. However, given the pricing history and rumored specs, the launch price could be north of $700, possibly nearing $800.

The specific details about the PS6’s specs are currently limited. It’s suggested that Sony will continue its partnership with AMD for the PS6 and PS5 Pro. If the PS6 does use AMD chips, backward compatibility would be simpler since the PS5 and PS5 Pro both run on custom AMD chipsets.

As for storage, it’s anticipated that the PS6 will have at least 2TB, especially if it ends up being a digital-only console.

According to Insider Gaming, one unique feature being developed for the PS6 is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This technology allows games to run either at 4K at 120 frames per second or 8K at 60 fps. This feature is confirmed to be part of the PS5 Pro, so it’s likely to be included in the PS6 as well.

While everything is speculative at this point, the future of PlayStation indeed seems promising.
