Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated in a recent Fox Business Network interview that President Donald Trump may consider lowering the 25 percent tariffs he has recently imposed on Canada and Mexico. The decision came less than 18 hours after the implementation of the tariffs.
“The Canadians and Mexicans have been in constant contact with me throughout the day, trying to demonstrate their commitment to reducing the influx of fentanyl into the United States,” Lutnick noted. “I believe Trump is going to negotiate a deal with them.”
Lutnick further elaborated, “This isn’t about calling a halt or taking a breather. Rather, it’s about finding a middle ground where both parties can agree. ‘You take more action, and I’ll meet you halfway,’ is likely to be the President’s approach. We expect to make an announcement about this soon.”
“A compromise is the most likely outcome, with the President working closely with Canada and Mexico,” Lutnick commented. He added that he did not foresee immediate tariff relief for China due to its ongoing support of fentanyl production, a substance that has been detrimentally impacting Americans.
