Hong Kong’s acclaimed filmmaker, Jun Li Jun-shuo, has publically stated that he was on the receiving end of threats and offensive remarks from German right-wing extremists. This occurred after he publicly voiced a pro-Palestine speech written by an Iranian actor at the globally-renowned Berlin International Film Festival. The incident has resulted in an investigation by the German police.
Jun-shuo, however, remains undeterred by these events. Speaking with the Post, he confirmed that he feels safe and has no intention of leaving the festival. With plans to witness the German election on Sunday and stay for the duration of the festival, he appears unperturbed. His latest film, ‘Queerpanorama’, made its debut at the event.
Jun-shuo expressed his belief that the incident could potentially affect the marketing of his film. However, he remains optimistic, stating, “The truth will become more apparent as it is debated, and I believe that those who maintain an open-minded approach will understand.” He voiced his thoughts on Friday.
He firmly condemns any form of violence targeted at innocent civilians and any systematic injustice that poses a risk to human lives.
Jun-shuo’s public reading of the speech at the festival the previous Saturday was captured in videos that were later shared online. Reports by German media outlets revealed that the controversial speech was written by Erfan Shekarriz, a cast member of Jun-shuo’s film, who chose to boycott the festival, also known as the Berlinale.
On Thursday, German law enforcement officials confirmed that they were investigating the incident. However, it is yet unclear whether Jun-shuo is personally implicated in the investigation.
