Former UK Prime Minister Johnson, known for his unwavering support of Ukraine and his admiration for Trump, voiced his support for the U.S. president on Wednesday. Though he refuted some of Trump’s recent assertions, he urged Europeans to view them as negotiation tactics rather than serious stances.
In a piece penned on X platform, Johnson urged, “The time is ripe for us, as Europeans, to cease being shocked by Donald Trump’s statements and begin assisting him in resolving this conflict.”
He went on to clarify, “It’s obvious that Ukraine didn’t instigate the war. Saying so would be like claiming that America initiated the attack on Pearl Harbor. It’s clear that a nation in the midst of a violent invasion shouldn’t be conducting elections. After all, the UK had no general elections from 1935 to 1945. And it’s a fact that Zelenskyy’s approval ratings are not at a dismal 4 percent. They’re actually on par with Trump’s.”
However, he further noted, “Trump’s declarations are not meant to be historically accurate. They’re designed to jolt Europeans into action.”
Since stepping down from his role in 2022, Johnson has been urging leading Republicans to continue their support for Ukraine. He has engaged in discussions about Ukraine with Trump over dinner and met the U.S. president at the Republican National Convention.
