The US announced that Ukraine is set to engage in peace talks with Russia, a revelation that took Kyiv by surprise – POLITICO.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressed his lack of knowledge about a supposed meeting in Saudi Arabia at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

He asserted that any discussions excluding Ukraine would not be substantial. “It doesn’t seem to be a serious conversation to me,” he said.

An unidentified Ukrainian official at the event expressed frustration over the unexpected news. The official wondered about the origin of such information and the expected results of a discussion that does not include Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in Kyiv, Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Zelenskyy, was even more forthright. He stated, “There’s nothing worth discussing on the table. Russia is not prepared for negotiations.”

Michael McCaul, a GOP Representative from Texas, surprised attendees at the conference by revealing that there would be a meeting in the following days. This meeting would include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Interpreting Trump’s Actions

The news and its ensuing confusion have heightened concerns across Europe. Fears are that President Donald Trump might broker a peace deal concerning Ukraine without involving Kyiv and other Western allies.
