Assistant to Von der Leyen conducted covert discussions with Trump’s staff during trade conflict – POLITICO

Seibert has yet to provide a statement following a request from POLITICO, and no official confirmation has been provided by the Commission regarding the specifics of the visit. In the midst of planning for a meeting between U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and von der Leyen in Paris earlier this week, Seibert initiated contact.

The Commission released a summary of the confidential meeting between Vance and von der Leyen, where she reiterated the EU’s dedication to maintaining an equitable trade relationship. They both agreed to focus on economic sectors of mutual benefit, including the energy sector.

In response to the announcement of tariffs, a virtual meeting was convened by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, with the 27 trade ministers of the bloc. Their strategic plan is believed to encompass comprehensive “reciprocal” tariffs that could potentially disrupt the $1.3 trillion transatlantic trade relationship.

Earlier in the week, the EU’s Trade Commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, had a discussion with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s choice for the position of Commerce Secretary. He also spoke with the designated U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, and Kevin Hassett, the director of the National Economic Council.
