A tragic incident unfolded on a recent ice fishing trip in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the adventure resulted in fatal consequences.
The incident took place at Grace Lake, located slightly west of Harrison Lake. The RCMP was alerted when two men, who had set out for ice fishing, did not return at the expected time. A concerned family member visited the lake, where they discovered an ominous hole in the ice along with fishing equipment scattered nearby.
The Agassiz RCMP, assisted by several search and rescue teams, rushed to the location. After a thorough search operation, they made the grim discovery of two bodies beneath the ice.
Cpl. Chad Raymond, a spokesperson for the Agassiz RCMP, expressed his deep condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. He emphasized the need for safety in such adventures, highlighting how ice conditions can rapidly change due to weather and water conditions, making it unsafe even if the thickness has been tested prior.
The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, a group of specialized divers, was called in to conduct the challenging and risky recovery operation in the aftermath. The authorities have ruled out any criminal involvement in the men’s deaths. The RCMP is now working closely with the BC Coroners Service, who are currently investigating the fatalities.
As the news of this tragic incident unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can accompany seemingly harmless recreational activities like ice fishing. It’s important to prioritize safety and ensure all precautions are taken before setting out on such adventures.
