In a surprising turn of events, Jaime Battiste, a prominent Nova Scotia Liberal MP, has announced his decision to withdraw from the Liberal party leadership race. Instead, he has pledged his support to Mark Carney, a former central banker.

Battiste, the only Indigenous candidate in the contest, was known for his efforts to bring First Nations issues to the forefront during the leadership race. His campaign released a statement late on Thursday announcing his withdrawal.

Battiste believes that supporting Carney’s bid for leadership is the best way to further the causes he holds dear, namely reconciliation, environmental protection, and affordability.

Following Battiste’s exit, the race now includes five candidates: Liberal MPs Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould, as well as former MPs Frank Baylis and Ruby Dhalla.

The Liberal party will select their new leader on March 9.

Whether you are an investor keen on political trends or simply interested in the dynamics of the political landscape, this development sheds light on the shifting alliances within the Liberal party and the potential impact on its future leadership.
