The New Brunswick administration has called for a review of the NB Power’s billing system following a wave of complaints from customers. Premier Susan Holt has ordered an independent third-party investigation into the utility provider’s methods, including the way meters are read. This comes in response to a sudden increase in electricity bills, as reported by numerous customers on NB Power’s social media platform.
The Premier has also requested the utility company to present itself before a public accounts committee in February to discuss the issue further. In an attempt to provide some respite to the customers, the provincial government has decided to eliminate a 10% provincial tax from power bills starting January 1. The next round of bills is expected to bring some relief to the customers.
Earlier this week, representatives from the government met with NB Power officials to understand the situation. However, Premier Holt stated that the discussion only led to more questions. This news was initially reported by The Canadian Press on January 21, 2025.
