Florists in Hong Kong anticipate booming trade during extended Lunar New Year festivities

Flower vendors in Hong Kong are optimistic about robust sales as they gear up for the forthcoming Lunar New Year at the city’s renowned floral market. The extended road closure of 10 days has gifted the sellers additional time for showcasing their products, thereby sparking hopes of increased business.

Despite the recent chilly weather and low moisture levels, the supply of flowers has not been affected, as per the vendors’ reports. Some have even diversified their offerings, adding items such as artisanal potted plants to their inventory to boost sales.

The most popular flowers among buyers include an array of orchids in hues of white, yellow, purple, and pink, peach blossom flowers, golden chrysanthemums, pussy willows, narcissus, gladiolus, peonies, mandarins, and tangerines.

May Cheng, a florist in her 50s, expressed her relief about the early closure stating, “The extended closure allows us to exhibit our merchandise for a longer duration without fear of penalties for obstructing the streets.” She anticipates an increase of 20 to 30 per cent in her shop’s stock owing to this provision.

She further added, “Running the business becomes challenging without the additional space in front of the shop, which also simplifies the process of loading and unloading.”

The authorities have shown leniency in this year’s arrangements, requiring vendors to relocate their merchandise less frequently. The vendors have reciprocated this flexibility by maintaining a cooperative attitude.
