Swapping of Presidential Office for Trump Relocated within the Capitol Owing to Chilly Weather Conditions

The inauguration ceremony for President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, scheduled for next Monday, will be held indoors at the Capitol due to extreme cold weather. This was announced by Donald Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Friday.

Trump shared about an Arctic blast that’s hitting the country and expressed his concerns about people getting hurt or injured. As a result, he decided to have the inauguration address, prayers, and other speeches delivered inside the United States Capitol Rotunda. This venue was also used by Ronald Reagan in 1985 during similarly cold conditions.

Weather experts predict that temperatures on Monday will range in the teens and low 20s, coupled with strong winds. There’s also a likelihood of snowfall on the day before the inauguration. The Capitol Rotunda, located under the Capitol dome, is a traditional venue for congressional ceremonies and celebrations.

Trump also revealed that the Capital One arena in downtown D.C. would be open for supporters to witness the ceremony live. After taking the oath, he plans to join the crowd at the arena, which will also host the presidential parade. The arena can accommodate approximately 20,000 people, which is a fraction of the crowd expected in Washington for the inauguration.

Access to the Rotunda will be reserved for dignitaries and VIP guests, and space is expected to be extremely limited. Trump assured that the experience, both for those present and the TV audience, would be beautiful. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which oversees the event planning, mentioned that most ticketed guests will be unable to attend the ceremonies in person.

The decision to move the inauguration indoors was reportedly the president-elect’s call. A plan to use the Rotunda for the swearing-in has been under consideration for months as a contingency. When Reagan was sworn in at the Rotunda in 1985, the outdoor temperature was 7 degrees, and wind chills made it feel much colder. This forced the ceremony to be moved indoors, resulting in a packed Rotunda with standing room only for VIPs.

Reagan was sworn in a day before the official inaugural celebrations since it fell on a Sunday. He thanked everyone for the honor and pledged to be deserving of their trust. Later in May, the high school marching bands that were supposed to perform at the inaugural parade played at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT, where Reagan also spoke.
