CES 2025: Dreame’s X50 Ultra is Capable of Ascending Stairs – Sort of.

CES 2025 is abundant with fresh and unusual advancements in the field of robotic vacuum cleaners. Dreame, a technology firm from China, has introduced its latest product, the X50 Ultra, which is touted as a stair-climbing robot vacuum. However, the real story is that the X50 Ultra doesn’t exactly scale stairs as you might imagine.

To be precise, the X50 Ultra only manages to “climb” if your steps are roughly two inches in height. This makes it more of a threshold-crossing device rather than a full-fledged stair-climber. Dreame’s marketing team in North America is promoting it as the “robot vacuum that can literally climb stairs”, a claim that seems somewhat exaggerated given that the X50 Ultra’s main function is to navigate minor hindrances such as cords or doorway edges, thanks to Dreame’s ProLeap System technology.

Nevertheless, the two-inch clearance is more than twice the typical clearance height of most robotic vacuum cleaners currently available. While it may not suffice to scale an entire step, it’s still an impressive feature.

We were unable to assess the X50 Ultra’s threshold-handling ability due to Wi-Fi related constraints. However, despite the somewhat inflated marketing claims, based on its specifications, the X50 Ultra appears to be a strong competitor in the market. It offers up to 20,000Pa of suction power, a HyperStream Detangling DuoBrush for hassle-free cleaning, and a 360-degree scanning sensor for smooth, efficient navigation.

Despite its threshold-climbing ability, you’ll still need to manually lift your robotic vacuum up the stairs, as it can only navigate thresholds just over two inches high. However, if you’re seeking a high-quality robot vacuum that can effectively manage obstacles on flat surfaces without getting stuck, the X50 Ultra could be a viable option.

The Dreame X50 Ultra will be available for pre-order starting January 7th at a price of $1,699 and is set to launch on Valentine’s Day 2024.
