GameStop’s subreddit brims with posts about shop shutdowns while Roaring Kitty teases potential new equity

Is the Curtain Falling on GameStop?

GameStop’s future looks uncertain. After shutting down hundreds of stores at the end of 2024, it appears that more closures are on the horizon for the video game store giant in 2025.

For years, the rise of digital downloads and the gradual phasing out of physical media by gaming consoles has signaled a potential downfall for GameStop. However, the company received an unexpected boost in 2021 when investor Keith Gill, also known as “Roaring Kitty,” sparked a meme stock frenzy that breathed new life into the business.

Regardless, it seems GameStop’s retail division has been unable to make a significant turnaround.

GameStop’s On-going Store Closures

Since 2020, GameStop has shut down over 700 stores. On the eve of 2025, the company closed nearly 300 additional retail locations.

While no official statement has been released regarding the first batch of closures for 2025, local media have begun reporting sudden closures of GameStop stores in their regions. Michigan-based news outlet MLive recently reported the impending closure of a GameStop location in the Westwood Mall in Jackson, MI on January 4th.

Reports of these new year closures first surfaced on Reddit, where a flurry of posts from employees who were just informed about their store’s closure and their job loss, started appearing.

“Just got informed my store is closing, just as many others have,” posted user Public_Direction9896. “Godspeed to you all. Friendly neighborhood GameStop employee, signing out.”

“Been with the company for almost 8 years. Got the call this afternoon. I’m devastated,” wrote Razenkaji on r/GameStop.

Roaring Kitty eyes another gaming meme stock?

While GameStop’s employees face an uncertain future, Gill, or Roaring Kitty, is experiencing no such turmoil. His holdings in GameStop remain strong even amid the store closures.

As of his last update on Reddit in June of the previous year, Roaring Kitty held a whopping 9 million GameStop shares, equivalent to approximately $280 million based on the current trading price.

Gill has also reportedly hinted at his interest in another video game company’s stock. On New Year’s Day, he posted a GIF of comedian Dave Chappelle in character as Rick James from a 2004 episode of Chappelle’s Show. Roaring Kitty’s followers interpreted this as a reference to Unity Software, leading to a swift 8 percent increase in Unity’s stock price.
