“A stolen truck, reportedly driving in the wrong direction on a major roadway in West Edmonton, triggered a chain of events that led to a multi-vehicle collision on Tuesday evening. The truck, which police confirm had been reported stolen, was seen running a red light, leading to a domino-effect collision and the closure of the intersection.
Edmonton Police Service initially received calls about a truck seen driving erratically on the city’s western outskirts. Responding to the scene near 106th Avenue and Winterburn Road, officers in an unmarked vehicle observed a Dodge Ram exhibiting erratic behavior. They confirmed the vehicle’s license plate had been reported stolen.
The stolen truck, closely and discreetly tracked by the police throughout West Edmonton, continued its reckless journey. Officers noted it driving on the shoulder of the road and slowly running a red light and a stop sign. The pursuit continued as the truck returned to the initial convenience store parking lot, where officers attempted to immobilize it.
Despite police efforts to safely halt the stolen vehicle using various tactics, the truck managed to escape and sped off, driving east into oncoming westbound traffic on Stony Plain Road. The officers chose not to pursue it further for safety reasons.
Shortly after, the fleeing truck ran a red light at the intersection of 178th Street, colliding with a northbound Purolator delivery truck. The resulting impact caused the delivery truck to hit three other stationary vehicles waiting at the red light, leaving two SUVs and one car damaged at the scene.
The truck driver, who fled the scene on foot, was shortly apprehended in a nearby hotel parking area. A single passenger from one of the stationary vehicles was transported to the hospital as a safety measure, though no other injuries were reported.
Upon searching the stolen truck, police discovered a shotgun and ammunition. The major collisions unit was called to the scene, resulting in the intersection closure for several hours while investigations were conducted. The police have reported that multiple charges are pending in connection to the incident.”
