For many years, Art Cashin, the Director of Floor Operations at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for UBS, had a tradition of penning a poem to reminisce the year’s happenings. Sadly, Art Cashin passed away earlier this month. As a tribute to their father, his sons, Arthur and Peter, shared this heartfelt poem:
A Homage to Art Cashin: Reflections by Arthur Cashin III and Peter Cashin
Our world was shaken in 2024,
As Wall Street paused, fearful of what lay in store.
With our father, Art, no longer present,
Would his New Year’s poem be absent?
My brother and I decided to give it a shot,
But insisted on one thing – the use of AI, it would not.
Born from the same lineage or nurtured in a similar environment,
We inherited his passion, his vice, his sentiment.
So, we pooled our humble intellect,
And pondered over the year’s events with respect.
The year saw Paris hosting the Olympics, making a grand start,
By floating the opening ceremony on the beautiful Seine’s heart.
A container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key,
And the world speculated about Putin’s role in Navalny’s mystery.
Syria saw the end of al-Assad’s reign,
Yet, in Ukraine and Gaza, the wars remain.
Globally, incumbents faced defeat,
While in the U.S., the 45th president became the 47th, a feat.
Wall Street saw another bull run,
And with Wegovy’s help, the battle against obesity was won.
Taylor Swift found her way back home,
And Travis Scott only bent his knee in the sports dome.
Boeing’s labor issues halted the 737,
Leaving two astronauts stranded between earth and heaven.
We bid farewell to finance giants,
Jim Simons and Home Depot’s Bernie Marcus, among others in silence.
The resonating bass of Hollywood, the voice behind Vader and Mufasa, is no more,
And the heavenly choir now includes Cissy and Whitney’s harmonious score.
Our tribute to Art and the year 2024 continues,
As we look forward to the promise that 2025 ensues.
Cherish those who are with you,
And remember those who were part of your crew.
From our family to yours, we wish you nothing but the best,
May your New Year be filled with abbondanza and zest!
Art Cashin was known for leading the annual singing of “Wait ’till the Sun Shines, Nellie” with current and former NYSE members every New Year’s Eve. This tradition will be upheld by his sons this year, ending with the ringing of the bell to mark the year’s end.
This article should resonate with those interested in investing or simply intrigued by Wall Street’s culture and tradition. However, it primarily serves as a tribute to a beloved figure, Art Cashin, and the legacy he left behind.
