In an exhilarating turn of events on Saturday, Quinton Byfield of the Los Angeles Kings secured his second goal of the match during the overtime, leading his team to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
Despite a robust performance by a few players, the Oilers couldn’t sustain their momentum throughout the game, as acknowledged by their head coach Kris Knoblauch. He highlighted that not all players were performing at their peak, which contributed to the loss.
The winning goal by Byfield was a sharp wrist shot from the right circle. This set the tone for the Kings in the first of four regular-season matches against the Oilers. Notably, the Oilers had previously ousted the Kings from the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.
The Kings’ victory was further bolstered by Warren Foegele, who contributed a goal and two assists. Tanner Jeannot also scored, marking the Kings’ sixth consecutive home win. In the meantime, Darcy Kuemper successfully made 24 stops.
Foegele expressed his pride in the team’s collective effort throughout the game. He emphasized the significance of the win due to the tight standings, and admitted that scoring against his former team felt particularly special.
On the Oilers’ side, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a power-play goal, with Kasperi Kapanen and Viktor Arvidsson also contributing to the score. However, their three-game winning streak came to an end, despite 24 saves by Stuart Skinner.
In an attempt to match the Oilers’ physicality demonstrated in the previous season, the Kings had brought in Foegele and Jeannot during the off-season. Playing alongside Byfield, their combined efforts resulted in seven points and a plus-7 rating, assisting the Kings’ victory.
The game revealed some of the Oilers’ vulnerabilities, as they lost points for the fifth time in 21 games when leading after two periods. Conversely, it highlighted the Kings’ ability to limit opportunities for Oilers’ power players, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
A critical moment in the game came during overtime when Jeannot snatched possession from Evan Bouchard, tiring out McDavid and Draisaitl on defense. As a result, the Kings capitalized on this advantage to secure their victory.
Both teams are set to return to the field on Sunday, with the Oilers facing off against Anaheim, and the Kings hosting Philadelphia.
