New West halt results in truck operator sustaining injuries from being trapped by cargo – British Columbia

A lorry operator is currently in critical condition at a hospital following a mishap in New Westminster on Monday. The event unfolded when the trucker came to a halt at a traffic light at the intersection of Stewardson Way and 12th Street, just before 11 in the morning.

According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement, it appears that the flatbed’s cargo of steel beams was not adequately secured, leading to it shifting forward due to the abrupt stop. This caused the load to break through the rear of the driver’s cab, trapping him between the seat and steering wheel.

In response to the incident, B.C. Emergency Health Services dispatched two ambulances, one equipped with primary care paramedics and another with advanced care paramedics, along with a supervisor. The victim was subsequently rushed to the hospital where his condition remains critical.

Investigations are underway by New Westminster police and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement to determine the cause of the accident. As a result of the ongoing investigation, one lane of Stewardson Way remains closed.

This incident serves as a reminder to all vehicle operators, especially those involved in the transportation of heavy goods, about the importance of proper cargo securement. Not only is it a matter of legal compliance, but it also plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of the driver and others on the road.

While the article should provide useful information for those interested in investing in logistics and transport sectors, its primary aim is to raise awareness about road safety and the importance of proper cargo securement in the trucking industry.
