Kyiv Accuses Slovakia of Capitalizing on War Through Russian Gas Transit Strategy, Reports POLITICO

An anonymous official has revealed that there’s an ongoing demand for imposing sanctions against Russia’s nuclear sector. Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is reportedly one of the main obstacles to these sanctions, as well as Ukraine’s efforts to join NATO.

Fico, along with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán, has been advocating for stronger ties with Moscow since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Recently, Fico claimed that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy offered him €500 million worth of Russian assets in exchange for supporting Ukraine’s bid to join NATO. Fico, however, declined the offer.

In response, the Ukrainian official clarified that Zelenskyy’s statement was misconstrued. He was merely suggesting Slovakia to consider alternative gas sources, similar to other EU countries.

As per the official, Zelenskyy proposed a deal to Fico, wherein Fico’s losses would be compensated if he agreed to aid Ukraine’s national security and support its NATO membership. However, Fico rejected the proposal.

The Ukrainian official further shared that Fico dismissed the idea of transporting any gas that isn’t Russian, citing national security concerns related to the revenue generated.

According to the official, Fico’s actions reveal that his interests lie not in security but elsewhere.
