On December 6, at Canada Life Place, the Oshawa Generals staged a remarkable comeback by scoring five consecutive goals, defeating the London Knights 5-3. This victory ended London’s impressive 19-game winning streak, which was the fifth longest in the history of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
Before leaving for Canada’s final selection camp for the World Junior Hockey Championship, Cowan scored a power play goal in the opening period, extending his point streak to 56 consecutive regular season games. This surpasses Doug Gilmour’s record of 55 games during the 1982-83 regular season. However, the OHL decided that Gilmour’s record will remain official as it was achieved within a single season, unlike Cowan’s which spanned over two seasons.
Unfortunately, Cowan had to exit the game in the second period after a hit from Oshawa defenseman, Zackary Sandhu at the Generals blue line. Sandhu also had to leave the game and did not return.
The Knights started strong with Blake Montgomery, the OHL Player of the Week, making it 12 points in 12 games as a Knight, with an assist from Will Nicholl. Cowan then extended his OHL regular season point streak by scoring a power play goal, giving London a 2-0 lead.
However, Oshawa began their remarkable comeback with power play goals from Luca Marrelli and Colby Barlow, reducing London’s lead to 3-2. In a quick turnaround lasting just over two minutes, Oshawa turned their one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead. Tyler Graham and Ben Danford, a prospect for the Maple Leafs, each scored a goal, bringing the score to 4-3 in favour of the Generals. Beckett Sennecke then scored with a clever move, solidifying Oshawa’s lead.
The final score of the game was 5-3, with Oshawa outshooting London 25-23. On the power play, the Knights were 1-for-4 while the Generals were more successful at 2-for-5.
Knights goaltender Aleksei Medvedev and London defender Henry Brzustewicz will participate in the first-ever Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game, scheduled for January 15, 2025, at the Brantford Civic Centre.
Next on the schedule, London will face the Windsor Spitfires on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., at Canada Life Place. Despite having one of the youngest rosters in the league, the Spitfires have been performing well, holding the third-best record in the OHL.
