Kingston Targets Transformation into a $20M Film Production Centre – Kingston

Kingston, Ontario, is set to become a significant contributor to Canada’s film industry, which is estimated to be worth $3.3 billion. A new film studio, estimated to cost $20 million, is being planned in the east end of the city. Jason Joly, the founder of Branded to Film, is the driving force behind this ambitious project, which is expected to create job opportunities, attract film productions, and stimulate the local economy.

Joly expressed his deep affection for the city and his desire to create something special that reflects Kingston’s unique character. The new facility will boast two large soundstages that are expected to draw film productions from all over Ontario. Joly anticipates that the project could contribute up to $100 million annually to the local economy while creating significant employment opportunities in the form of crew hires and local services.

Joly emphasized the project’s commitment to local employment, stating, “We hire and train at least 60 percent of the crew here in Kingston. Our first film saw 70 percent of the budget spent with local vendors.”

Mayor Bryan Paterson supports the project and highlighted the potential economic benefits it could bring to the city. Kingston’s strategic location near major urban centres, combined with its blend of historic and modern architecture, makes it a compelling alternative to Toronto’s saturated and costly market.

The project has even drawn investment from members of The Tragically Hip, a Canadian rock band, which has generated attention and support for the studio. The construction is scheduled to commence in spring 2025, marking a significant milestone in Kingston’s pursuit to become a prime destination for the film industry.

The article’s intent is not to persuade readers to invest but to inform those who are interested in the film industry or are considering investing in it.
