Title: “Tragic Incident at Unicity Mall: Winnipeg Police Officers Involved in Shooting”
In a distressing incident on Sunday evening, Winnipeg police officers were involved in a fatal shooting near a bus stop at the Unicity Mall. The incident occurred after a man reportedly attacked a plainclothes officer with a sharp object, causing serious injury to the officer’s throat.
The incident took place on Portage Avenue, as part of the Retail Theft Initiative by the police. The assailant attacked one of the officers present, prompting another officer to intervene and shoot the attacker.
Despite the immediate medical intervention by the officers on the scene, who administered CPR to the wounded man, he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The injured officer, who was also taken to the hospital, is currently in recovery.
Acting Chief of Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), Art Stannard, addressed the public in a press conference held on Sunday night. “The officer is stable and is expected to be discharged soon,” said Stannard. He also informed that the identity of the deceased man is yet to be confirmed.
Chief Stannard further addressed the circulation of online videos depicting the shooting. He cautioned the public about the incomplete narrative these videos may present and urged them to await the outcome of the official investigation. “We request the public to refrain from making judgments based on these videos. Allow the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) to conduct their probe,” he said.
One such video, viewed by Global News, shows two officers with their weapons aimed at a man who then appears to advance towards them. The officers then shoot at the man, who subsequently falls to the ground.
The incident attracted a significant emergency response, with numerous emergency vehicles seen at the Unicity Mall on Sunday evening. The Independent Investigation Unit has since taken charge of the investigation.
