“The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a death and at least 39 illnesses due to E.coli infections. These are believed to be connected to fresh carrots distributed by various prominent grocery chains across 18 states. The implicated carrots were sold by California-based Grimmway Farms.
Retail giants such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s are among the stores that retailed the carrots under various brand names. The carrots in question include both whole bagged carrots and baby carrots.
As per the CDC, these carrots are unlikely to be present in the stores currently. However, consumers may still possess them at home and are advised to discard them immediately.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated last Saturday that Grimmway Farms has voluntarily recalled the carrots. They have also been distributed in Canada and Puerto Rico.
The recall affects whole carrots with best-if-used-by dates from August 14 through October 23. Baby carrots with dates from September 11 through November 12 have also been recalled.
Grimmway Farms, headquartered in Bakersfield, California, has confirmed that they are reviewing their cultivation, harvesting, and processing practices. They are actively cooperating with suppliers and health authorities in this matter.
Grimmway Farms used to be a family-owned business. However, it was bought by private equity firm Teays River Investments in 2020, as per several media outlets.”
