In the latest development from the Middle East, the village of Khreibeh in the Baalbek District of eastern Lebanon experienced a series of devastating Israeli airstrikes on Saturday. The Lebanese health ministry reports that the attack claimed six lives, including those of three children, and left 11 others injured.
Among the wounded are five children, with two in dire conditions. Earlier airstrikes on the same day resulted in the death of two medics in south Lebanon and injured four additional rescue workers. Two of these individuals are reportedly still unaccounted for.
The Israel military has been consistently targeting regions in the southern suburbs of Beirut, currently under the control of the Iran-backed group Hezbollah. Saturday marked the fifth consecutive day of these airstrikes, with a reported 15 strikes taking place, as per security sources. The Israeli military has asserted that these attacks are focused on Hezbollah infrastructure, which includes a weapons storage facility and a command center.
The military also confirmed the death of a soldier during combat in southern Lebanon. However, there has been no official statement from the Lebanese authorities regarding casualties resulting from the strikes on the capital’s southern suburbs.
Israel initiated its ground and air offensive against Hezbollah in late September, following nearly a year of cross-border hostilities. The country’s primary objective is to ensure the safe return of tens of thousands of Israelis who were forced to evacuate from northern Israel due to Hezbollah fire.
Despite the heavy blows dealt to Hezbollah, the campaign has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, forcing over a million Lebanese citizens to abandon their homes.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, have resulted in the deaths of at least 3,452 people. These figures do not differentiate between civilian casualties and fighters. On the other hand, Israel claims that Hezbollah attacks over the past year have resulted in about 100 deaths, including civilians and soldiers, in northern Israel, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and southern Lebanon.
While these ongoing conflicts may not directly affect investors, it’s crucial to stay informed about global events as they can indirectly impact the global economy and market trends.
