In a recent development, a 35-year-old woman from Edmonton has been taken into police custody and charged linked to the tragic drowning of a young five-year-old girl in Wabamun Lake the previous month.
The woman, identified as Mary Quinn, faces charges of not providing the necessaries of life, according to an official statement released by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) last Friday. Quinn’s arrest took place earlier that week on Wednesday.
The unfortunate incident occurred on October 13 at Moonlight Bay situated in Wabamun Lake, approximately 70 kilometers west of Edmonton. The police were alerted to the incident at around 3 p.m. after receiving a distress call about a capsized canoe, with initial reports suggesting that two individuals were aboard the vessel at the time.
The RCMP reported that bystanders managed to pull a young girl out of the water before the arrival of police and paramedics. Despite the best efforts of the paramedics to save her life, the young girl sadly lost her life. The other person who was reportedly in the canoe, a woman, was also rescued from the water by an individual from another boat.
In a follow-up announcement on October 17, the police revealed that the initial theory of the canoe capsizing was no longer considered valid. The RCMP confirmed that they were treating this tragic incident as a criminal investigation. By October 29, the police had declared the child’s death as “suspicious”, and the case was handed over to the RCMP’s major crimes unit for further investigation.
Last Friday, the RCMP stated that Quinn had been placed in custody and her court appearance is scheduled for November 20.
