A pre-election leaflet disseminated to residents in Regina has ignited a discussion about candidate endorsements. Some candidates have expressed dissatisfaction, alleging they have been misrepresented in their beliefs and principles.
Over the past weekend, numerous vehicles in Regina were adorned with pamphlets claiming that local schools and students are being overwhelmed with sexual education. The leaflets, as observed by Global News, detailed a roster of school trustee and city council candidates whom the leaflet suggests would strive to remove sexual education from classrooms.
Alex Tkach, a candidate vying for the councilor position in Regina’s Ward 8, expressed his displeasure upon discovering his name on this list. Tkach conveyed his frustration over being randomly included in the list and the insinuations that he supports certain views.
Tkach, along with other candidates, had to devote their time in the final days of the campaign to damage control instead of focusing on their campaign, which he admitted was quite unfair.
The controversial pamphlet has been partially attributed to Wayne Bernakevitch, the founder of the Regina Civic Action Awareness Network (RCAAN). Bernakevitch, when contacted, clarified that neither he nor RCAAN were involved in the creation of the pamphlet, which he claimed was made by a friend. Despite this, he did give permission for his name to be used. Bernakevitch expressed confusion over why city councilor candidates’ names were included in the pamphlet.
Tanis Wilder, another candidate running for councilor in Regina’s Ward 9, was taken aback to find her name included in the pamphlet. She emphasized that city councilors do not have a say in curriculum matters and was scrambling to clarify the misunderstanding. Wilder expressed her discomfort over her association with RCAAN and how it led to a flurry of queries from residents about her stance on unrelated issues.
Wilder stated that she is focusing on local issues in Regina Northwest. She urged residents to make their voting decisions based on their own research about the candidate’s views and how closely they align with their own values. She also stressed the importance of focusing on the issues that matter to the community, such as infrastructure development.
