The Hong Kong branch of the Chinese Foreign Ministry has sharply criticized British politicians, calling them “hypocritical” for their alleged meddling in the city’s internal affairs. This rebuke came after the son of incarcerated former media mogul Jimmy Lai Chee-ying met with the UK Foreign Secretary to seek assistance for his father’s release.
On Tuesday, a stern statement was issued by China’s Foreign Ministry Commissioner’s Office in Hong Kong. This followed a meeting between Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Sebastien Lai Sung-yan, which took place in London last week.
The #FreeJimmyLai social media account on Monday expressed thanks to Lammy for the fruitful meeting with Sebastien Lai and his father’s international legal representatives. The post emphasized that “the UK government must do all it can.”
Jimmy Lai, aged 76, has been in custody since December 2020. He faces two charges of conspiring with foreign forces and a third charge of plotting to print and distribute seditious materials through his now-ceased tabloid newspaper, Apple Daily. Lai, a holder of a British passport, is still waiting for his trial.
Lammy shared a social media post on Monday, stating, “Thank you, Sebastien, for meeting me last week. Your father’s case is a priority for the UK government. We will continue to press for his immediate release and for consular access.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s office in Hong Kong voiced their staunch disapproval and opposition towards what they perceive as British politicians’ interference in Hong Kong’s judicial procedures.
For those interested in international affairs or considering investment opportunities, understanding the political dynamics between nations and how they might impact business interests is key. This situation highlights the tense relationship between China and the UK over issues of civil liberties and judicial independence in Hong Kong.
