Cavalry FC of Calgary Clinches Inaugural Victory in Canadian Premier League

“Calgary’s Cavalry FC has clinched their inaugural Canadian Premier League championship. The landmark victory saw goals from Tobias Warschewski and Sergio Camargo, propelling the team to a 2-1 triumph over the formidable Hamilton’s Forge FC in the CPL Final.

The historic event unfolded before a capacity crowd of 7,052 at Spruce Meadows, where the Calgary club raised the North Star Cup, a first in the league’s six-year duration. The triumph was marked by jubilant scenes as Cavalry players and coaches celebrated their underdog victory over the four-time champions, Forge.

This victory was a sweet revenge for Cavalry, who had lost to Forge in the 2019 CPL Cup final with a 2-0 aggregate defeat in the two-match series. Then in 2023, Forge claimed a 2-1 victory in extra time at Tim Hortons Field.

Warschewski, the 2024 CPL Golden Boot winner, broke the ice in the 32nd minute with a top-shelf penalty kick that left Forge’s goalkeeper, Jassem Koleilat, clutching at thin air. Warschewski then set up Camargo for the second goal, providing a comfortable 2-0 lead for Cavalry.

However, Forge narrowed the gap to 2-1 early in the second half, thanks to Alexander Achinioti-Jonsson’s goal. Despite their relentless pressure, the Hamilton side could not manage to equalize.

The final moments saw the crowd, led by the official Cavalry FC fan group, the Foot Soldiers, creating an electrifying atmosphere with their chants and songs.

The CPL currently comprises teams from eight cities: Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Halifax. Both Cavalry FC and Forge FC have secured spots in the prestigious 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

This victory not only marks a significant milestone for Cavalry FC but also adds a new exciting chapter to the Canadian Premier League’s history.”
