Title: “Chinese Media Calls for Better U.S Relations Amid Election Uncertainty”
As the United States election drama unfolds, China opts to keep mum, emphasizing that it is an internal affair. However, on Wednesday, the country urged for mutual respect and collaboration. The state-run media, however, have been vocal about their apprehensions and aspirations, with one press outlet suggesting the incoming president, regardless of identity, should aim to improve the strained relations between the two countries.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press conference, stated that China’s stance towards the U.S remains steady amidst indications that Trump, the former president, was poised for victory.
“Our approach towards U.S.-China relations will persist in the spirit of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutual benefit,” Mao underlined.
Meanwhile, ‘China Daily’ voiced its discontent with the “U.S hawks” for the worsened U.S-China relations in an article titled “Onus on new US president to improve ties”.
Fu Suixin and Ni Feng, Chinese scholars, expressed in the article, “No matter the election outcome, the result will significantly influence the world, primarily because the victor will shape the U.S.’s policy towards China.”
The scholars pointed out that both U.S. presidential candidates used the “China card” to attract votes. They also suggested that while U.S. citizens “generally do not comprehend or show interest in foreign policy, the nation’s elites have always been the ones shaping foreign policy and public opinion.”
Both political parties in the U.S., they claimed, use China as a scapegoat for domestic issues. “The voters bear the brunt of the worsening China-U.S. relations.”
The scholars added, “The forthcoming U.S. administration should abandon the illusion of a unanimous China policy and reflect on the drawbacks of undermining Sino-U.S. relations over the past eight years — and must honestly communicate to the American people the truth about China.”
‘China Daily’ also published an opinion piece by Djoomart Otorbaev, the former prime minister of Kyrgyzstan, titled “Rebuilding Sino-US trust crucial for world”.
Otorbaev noted the hostility between the U.S. and China “has escalated to a stage where the threat of not just a cold war but even a real war is alarmingly real.” He further stated that the two largest economies’ rising rivalry is obstructing their collaboration.
Otorbaev urged the U.S. and China to “agree to coexist peacefully, engage in fair competition, manage friction and confrontations calmly, and avoid conflict.”
He concluded, “The main issue between Beijing and Washington is mutual distrust, making short-term cooperation unlikely. However, both sides should prioritize discussions, swiftly implement effective confidence-building measures, and start doing it as soon as possible.”
In a related note, the ‘Global Times’, the sister publication of the ‘People’s Daily’, warned about the potential for violence and unrest and its impact on global financial markets.
