Title: Health Concerns Amid School Trip: Children from Hong Kong Affected by Gastroenteritis

The Hong Kong Health Authorities, on Monday, revealed that a group of 26 pupils from a local primary school fell ill with acute gastroenteritis during their educational journey to Guangdong province’s cities.

These unfortunate students were part of a larger group consisting of 116 students and 12 educators from Po Leung Kuk Hong Kong Taoist Association Yuen Yuen Primary School, located in Tuen Mun. They embarked on this educational exploration to the cities of Guangzhou and Foshan over the weekend.

Students affected by this unexpected health issue included 15 boys and 11 girls, aged between 10 and 11 years. According to the Centre for Health Protection, they exhibited symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, and fever. The first signs of illness emerged when a student started vomiting during the journey, which was then followed by others showing similar gastrointestinal symptoms.

Despite the illness, it was confirmed that hospitalisation was not required for any of the affected students. Two of them sought medical help, but all are now reported to be in stable health condition, as per the health centre.

The Centre for Health Protection is currently looking into the cause of the outbreak. Initial theories suggest either person-to-person transmission or environmental contamination. The investigation is still underway, and further updates are awaited.
