China’s President Xi Jinping has shared his vision for Macau with the city’s upcoming leader, emphasizing the importance of responsibility, a diversified economy, improved living conditions, and enhanced national security laws. This directive was passed on by Chief Executive-elect, Sam Hou-fai, who also announced his intention to settle on his cabinet members within the month, with current officials in the running.
Sam Hou-fai, former Chief Justice of Macau’s highest court, secured the support of 98.5% of eligible voters in the October 13 election. Following his acceptance of the appointment letter from Premier Li Qiang at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, he met with President Xi.
Reflecting on his encounter with the central leadership, Sam expressed, “This is the first time I’ve interacted with such influential central leadership.” He added that this meeting underscores the central government’s concern for every citizen of Macau and vividly illustrates President Xi’s commitment to fully implementing the ‘one country, two systems’ principle and the administration of Macau by its locals.
Sam also pointed out that President Xi demonstrated a thorough understanding of the city’s hurdles during their discussion, highlighting issues like healthcare, an aging population, childcare, transportation, and urban renewal. With this guidance, Sam’s administration is poised to tackle these challenges head-on and stimulate economic growth and prosperity in Macau.
This strategy will not only benefit existing residents but also provide a stable and promising environment for potential investors who view Macau as a lucrative opportunity. Despite this, the primary purpose of these plans is to ensure the city’s growth and the well-being of its residents.
