Roblox Moves to Prioritize Child Safety with New Features

Roblox, a popular online platform among children, has frequently been the subject of discussions regarding the safety of its younger users. Recognizing these concerns, the company has taken steps towards improving safety measures.

According to Bloomberg, Roblox is planning to roll out improved child safety features in the coming month. A notable addition is the introduction of parent accounts, providing guardians with oversight of their children’s activities on the platform. Furthermore, the company will necessitate parental consent for users aged 13 or below to access specific functions or modes.

Still, for some of Roblox’s harshest critics, these safety improvements might seem insufficient given the platform’s vastness. As a versatile gaming creation platform, Roblox hosts an endless array of games and modes. Unfortunately, this means a subset of these can be, at best, unsuitable and at worst, manipulative for a young audience.

Roblox’s struggles with child safety have been regularly highlighted. A recent case that garnered attention was the arrest of a woman in Florida, charged with manipulating a 10-year-old into harming an infant. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. There’s a distressing pattern of similar cases, one being a 2022 lawsuit accusing Roblox of facilitating the sexual and financial exploitation of a young girl. Sony also prohibited Roblox from their PlayStation consoles due to safety issues until recently.

However, the introduction of any child safety features should be viewed positively. It’s a step in the right direction for the company as it works to create a safer environment for its young users.
