Early Wednesday morning, a tragic incident occurred on Highway 1, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The unfortunate event unfolded when a car’s tire detached, leading to a devastating crash.
The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Trans-Canada and Provincial Road 206. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), an SUV and a car were moving side by side in an eastward direction on Highway 1. Suddenly, the passenger tire of the car, along with various mechanical components, detached and struck the SUV.
The car instantly burst into flames, and the SUV veered off the road and capsized. A 59-year-old man from Steinbach, who was driving the SUV, tragically lost his life in the accident. A 45-year-old passenger in the SUV sustained injuries but was reported to be in a non-critical condition.
The 25-year-old Calgary resident, who was driving the car, managed to escape the blazing vehicle. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Simultaneously, a third car, which was closely following the initial collision, collided with the dislodged tire parts. A 28-year-old woman from Kenora, Ontario, was driving this vehicle and was taken to the hospital with minor physical injuries.
