Sebastian Aho became the hero of the night when he netted the game-winning goal in overtime, as well as providing an assist. This led the Carolina Hurricanes to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, after a third-period rally.
Aho managed to beat Edmonton’s goaltender, Stuart Skinner, with a one-timer in the dying moments of overtime, leaving only 6.1 seconds on the clock.
The Hurricanes were further bolstered by the performance of Martin Necas, who chipped in with a goal and two assists. Shayne Gostisbehere also continued his scoring run, netting a goal for the fourth game in a row and providing an assist. The Hurricanes now hold a 3-2-0 record, having won three of their last four matches.
Connor McDavid was the standout performer for the Oilers, scoring both of their goals. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent the Oilers from sliding to a 2-4-1 record after two consecutive losses.
Both teams’ goaltenders put on a display of exceptional skill, with numerous extraordinary saves. Frederik Andersen of the Hurricanes made 33 saves, while Skinner of the Oilers managed 30 stops.
Andersen has a strong record against the Oilers, having won 17 out of the 21 games he’s played against them in his 12-year career.
Gostisbehere’s scoring form continues, with his fourth consecutive goal marking his third power play goal this season. This is already more than the two he scored in the entire 2023-24 season with Detroit.
Sebastian Aho also extended his scoring streak to four games.
For the Oilers, McDavid continued his impressive form, extending his point streak to six games. He also boasts a 30-game home points streak against teams from the Eastern Conference. However, the Oilers have struggled when McDavid has not performed, holding a 48-5-3 record when he scores multiple goals.
The key moment in the game came when Skinner made an exceptional save against Necas during a Carolina power play in the third period. Despite failing to clear the puck, Gostisbehere managed to score, extending his goal-scoring streak to four games.
The Hurricanes managed to equalize with just over six minutes remaining, as Eric Robinson set up Necas for his second goal of the season.
The Oilers have struggled offensively, coming into the game with the joint-lowest goals per game in the league. Their penalty kill was the worst in the NHL, and their power play was fourth from the bottom in the league.
Next up for the Hurricanes is a game against the Calgary Flames on Thursday, while the Oilers will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.
