In the recent past, Sound Ventures, the Beverly Hills-based venture firm led by Ashton Kutcher, Guy Oseary, and Effie Epstein, unveiled a new $265 million AI fund. This fund was largely aimed at significant language model companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face.
Interestingly, the strategy was to pump money into only a handful of firms — a bold move that could yield massive returns in the future. This is based on the belief that due to the technical expertise and funds required to support computation costs, only a few AI companies will emerge as major winners.
Sound Ventures has since amassed additional funding for the same project. It has also seemingly remained true to its original mission, as evidenced by the limited number of deals it disclosed publicly in 2024. We’re excited to host the trio at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 to discuss their strategy and the current trends they’re monitoring.
Kutcher has seemingly transitioned from acting to investing with great success, more so than any other Hollywood figure. His journey into the venture world began in 2010 with the establishment of A-Grade Investments alongside talent manager and business associate Guy Oseary. Their early investments in Airbnb and Uber have solidified their knack for seizing the right opportunities at the perfect time.
Years later, the duo founded Sound Ventures in 2014, and subsequently brought in Epstein to augment their skills. Epstein has a wealth of experience, having led global strategy at Marsh & McLennan subsidiary Marsh, served as SVP of planning and head of investor relations at iHeartMedia, and worked in business development at Clear.
